2004, - UKSEMINAR: TOOLS FOR PUBLIC PARTICIPATION, CONFLICT RESOLUTION
AND DECISION-MAKING IN WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT, LONDON
Public decision-making, consultation, participation and social learning
in water management are becoming increasingly widespread and mainstream.
There are major challenges in ensuring the necessary level and type
of participation in order to foster mutual understanding, create visions
of, and plans for, water allocation between competing users/uses, and
to tie in stakeholders into the implementation and monitoring of new
activities. This meeting will present and discuss research and work
that has examined the use of different tools and methodologies to facilitate
public involvement in water management. More

SYSTEMS FOR WATER POLLUTION CONTROL, AVIGNON - FRANCE
Stabilisation ponds and constructed wetlands are both extensive techniques
which are used worldwide for treating wastewaters; they offer similar
advantages: very low energy consumption, low O&M costs and skills
required, while providing high treatment efficiency.
In addition, there is a growing interest in the possibilities offered
by combinations of stabilisation ponds and constructed wetlands for
treatment improvement and better environmental protection.

2004 : 6TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SEDIMENT QUALITY ASSESSMENT (SQA6):
WATERSHED - SEDIMENT MANAGEMENT, FROM SOURCE TO SINK, ANTWERPEN - BELGIUM
The Aquatic Ecosystem
Health & Management Society (AEHMS) started up the Sediment Quality
Assessment symposia 10 years ago in Sweden. Only a limited number of
people were interested in the assessment and management of sediments,
but since then there has been increasing interest, reflected by the
increasing number of participants every two years respectively in Sweden,
Italy, The Netherlands, Japan and the USA. Sediment management has evolved
over this period to cover risk management on a watershed level. This
symposium provides a forum to present and explore state-of-the-art technology
in the field of sediment quality assessment and management from source
to sink. International experts working on sediment issues, will have
the chance to meet each other to discuss current topics related to the
field. Prior to the symposium the final workshop of the SedNet working
group "Site Investigation and Characterisation" will be held
to determine a definite proposal for the monitoring of sediment quality
in European river basins.
The symposium will focus on sediment management holistically from a
watershed perspective. The scientific themes that will be addressed
include:
- Risk assessment of contaminated sediments
- Origin, transport and quantity of sediments
- Sediment management in river basins
- Sediments in a changing environment
- Harbor management

- 26 - 27 FEBRUARY 2004 WORKSHOP ON WATER AND POLITICS,
, MARSEILLES FRANCE
The way water and
politics interact is critical for the decision and implementation of
water reforms. Politics, defined here as the process through which relations
of power are constituted, negotiated and, reproduced, is indeed in the
background of all public decisions and action. Although obvious to water
practitioners, this political component has not received sufficient
attention so far. On the contrary, international discourse often exerts
a strong depoliticising effect by focusing on neutral concepts, which
avoid controversies that need to be developed and properly addressed.
That is why the World Water Council (WWC) has initiated a 'Water and
Politics' project that aims to raise awareness of the importance of
political issues in water reforms and to identify how politics can be
a tool for the water community. Further information... : http://www.worldwatercouncil.org/water_politics/workshop.shtml

, WAGENINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS
IAC organises
an Interactive Seminar Linking Participatory Practice and Governance
- Challenges for a Learning Society on Wednesday 17 September
2003 in Wageningen.
There is rapidly growing recognition that sustainable development requires
forms of governance that can bring civil society, business and government
sectors together in processes of learning, innovation and negotiation.
But what does this mean in practice? What mechanisms of governance enable
a society to learn its way forward? The seminar will link theory and
practice and is relevant for practitioners, policy makers, managers
of development programmes, researchers and students. Keynote address
will be held by Dr. Minu Hemmati, who coordinated the 'Implementation
Conference: Stakeholder Action For Our Common Future', held immediately
prior to the UN Summit in Johannesburg. This process and event has resulted
in over 20 partnership initiatives in the areas of on freshwater; energy;
food security; and health. <http://www.iac.wur.nl/services/training/regular/MSP_seminar.htm>More

BROADS IN ENGLAND,, NORWICH - ENGLAND
The Broads Authority
is hosting a wetland workshop as part of a European LIFE Environment
Project on Living Lakes: Sustainable Management of Wetlands and Shallow
Lakes that is being implemented by partners of the Living Lakes network.
The workshop is geared towards managers, planners and decision makers
in wetland areas but is open to all interested people. The major focus
of the course will be on presentations and excursions covering issues
of management planning for lakes and wetlands. Apart from experiences
in management planning and wetland restoration at the Broads, local
experts will present case studies from the Greek Nestos lakes and the
Spanish steppe Lake La Nava.
The workshop and field trips are organised by the Broads Authority with
support from BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) under
the auspices of a Living Lakes project, part funded by the European
Commission's LIFE Environment Programme. The project is being implemented
by the German-based Global Nature Fund, in partnership with the Broads
Authority and several government and non-government bodies in Greece
and Spain.
Two days will be spent in the field, including visits to two broads,
one of which will be Barton Broad where participants will learn about
a major restoration project. The field trips are part of the 8th International
Living Lakes Conference. Participants will also experience sustainable
means of enjoying the Broads by taking advantage of wherry sailing,
solar boating and canoe-hire schemes.
While the workshop session is free (only 15 EURO for food and coffee),
participants will need to pay for accommodation (60 EURO/per night),
food and transport during the field trip (110 € for participants
from NGOs, 150 € for others). <http://www.livingwetlands.de/>Further
