  • 17-20 AUGUST 2004 : 6TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SEDIMENT QUALITY ASSESSMENT (SQA6): WATERSHED - SEDIMENT MANAGEMENT, FROM SOURCE TO SINK, ANTWERPEN - BELGIUM

The Aquatic Ecosystem Health & Management Society (AEHMS) started up the Sediment Quality Assessment symposia 10 years ago in Sweden. Only a limited number of people were interested in the assessment and management of sediments, but since then there has been increasing interest, reflected by the increasing number of participants every two years respectively in Sweden, Italy, The Netherlands, Japan and the USA. Sediment management has evolved over this period to cover risk management on a watershed level. This symposium provides a forum to present and explore state-of-the-art technology in the field of sediment quality assessment and management from source to sink. International experts working on sediment issues, will have the chance to meet each other to discuss current topics related to the field. Prior to the symposium the final workshop of the SedNet working group "Site Investigation and Characterisation" will be held to determine a definite proposal for the monitoring of sediment quality in European river basins.
The symposium will focus on sediment management holistically from a watershed perspective. The scientific themes that will be addressed include:
- Risk assessment of contaminated sediments
- Origin, transport and quantity of sediments
- Sediment management in river basins
- Sediments in a changing environment
- Harbor management

  • 26 - 27 FEBRUARY 2004 WORKSHOP ON WATER AND POLITICS, , MARSEILLES FRANCE
The way water and politics interact is critical for the decision and implementation of water reforms. Politics, defined here as the process through which relations of power are constituted, negotiated and, reproduced, is indeed in the background of all public decisions and action. Although obvious to water practitioners, this political component has not received sufficient attention so far. On the contrary, international discourse often exerts a strong depoliticising effect by focusing on neutral concepts, which avoid controversies that need to be developed and properly addressed. That is why the World Water Council (WWC) has initiated a 'Water and Politics' project that aims to raise awareness of the importance of political issues in water reforms and to identify how politics can be a tool for the water community.
