24 - 25 November
: "Water scarcity and management under Mediterranean climate",
Girona, Spain
Aim of
the meeting: Mediterranean regions are submitted to irregular water
supply and rising water demands. This combination of factors may have
catastrophic effects on ecosystems but may also result in relevant economic
and social constraints. This meeting will discuss about the different
aspects of the water cycle under water scarcity, in order to define
the implications and the relevant strategies to make compatible the
improvement of natural systems and the appropriate management of the
water resources. The meeting will address the following issues:
- The implication
of water scarcity on the quality of water, the ecosystem conservation,
and the societal response in terms of domestic availability, industry,
and agriculture.
- The most
appropriate management possibilities under water scarcity and within
the prospects of global change.

Saving Europe's Water
Friends of Europe
and the European Water Partnership (EWP) are co-organising the European
Policy Summit on Water focussing on saving Europe's water and its place
in the EU Green Strategy on 5th November 2008. Venue will be the Bibliothèque
Solvay in Brussels (Belgium).
It will include the participation of EU Commissioner for the Environment
Stavros Dimas. A few months ahead of the fifth World Water Forum in
Istanbul, this event will be the main European Summit in its preparation,
providing concrete input into the European Regional Process towards
the Forum.
In 2006, the first
European Policy Summit on Water organised by Friends of Europe and the
EWP provided a Europe-wide platform to debate the EU's water policies
for the first time. This year, the third annual summit will be dedicated
to the European Regional Process for the fifth World Water Forum, bringing
together international institutions, national and local governments,
industries, NGOs and other stakeholders from the water sector in Europe
and beyond to discuss three issues of great importance to Europe:
Climate Change and
Adaptation - Finance - Water Scarcity and Droughts
Registration
can be accomplished online. The programme
also is available on the internet.

2 Oct 2008 : European Conference on Flood Risk Management,
Venue: Oxford, UK
, Organisers: FLOODRisk 2008
Floods cause distress and damage wherever they happen and flooding from
rivers, estuaries and the sea threatens many millions of people in Europe.
Insurance losses from flooding have increased significantly since 1990
and flood management in Europe is changing with a move from flood protection
and defence to comprehensive flood risk management. FLOODrisk 2008 is
an initiative of FLOODsite, the largest European research project on
flooding, coordinated by HR Wallingford. FLOODrisk 2008 is an open forum
for researchers, flood risk managers, policy makers and practitioners
from government, commercial and research organisations, designers, owners
and national agencies to discuss advances, case studies and best practice
in this important subject. FLOODrisk 2008 is also supported by the Flood
Risk Management Research Consortium. The call for abstracts of papers
for FLOODrisk 2008 is open, and the deadline for abstract submission
is 14 January 2008. more

Global changes brought on by population growth, climate change, urbanization,
expansion of infrastructure, migration, land conversion and pollution
is altering the Earth and the way it functions. Although these changes
are global, no institution or country can face the challenges they pose
alone. UNESCO-IHP, as the only intergovernmental programme on water
sciences with a focus on freshwater in the UN system, can foster the
cooperation needed to bring all players together, whether they are Member
States, research institutions, universities, UN agencies, NGOs, or national

20 August 2008 Water emergency in Switzerland ? Effects
of climate change on
Venue : Landquart
(Switzerland)
Climate change does directly intervene in the alpine water cycle. Experts
anticipate less precipitation in summer as well as further rise of the
snow line and ongoing meltdown of glaciers. What effects will those
shifts have on alpine regions? Will there be a "water emergency"
in Switzerland? These questions will be discussed at the fourth annual
meeting of the "Mountain Water Network" (Kompetenznetzwerk
Wasser im Berggebiet). As every year, the meeting will be closed by
the Swiss Mountain Water Award.

16-21 June 2008 : 4th ECRR Conference on River Restoration,
Venue: Venice, Italy
Organizers: European Centre for River Restoration, Centro
Italiano per la Riqualificazione Fluviale
River Restoration
is a challenging topic and involves a wide range of themes concerning
planning strategy, implementation and project appraisal for a number
of different types of river systems including upland, lowland and urban
rivers. Topic areas addressed include hydrology, geomorphology, ecology
and economics as, to be successful, restoration of freshwater ecosystems
must incorporate all of these subjects within a holistic framework.
This conferences
objectives are to share knowledge and concepts, approaches, methods
and strategies on River Restoration; disseminate experiences from especially
European (but also extra-European) case studies and share the most promising
applied research solutions to be adopted in integrated River Restoration
projects/interventions.

2008 The European Water Association (EWA) organises the
Workshop on the Evaluation on Current Knowledge on the Risks of Using
Treated Sewage Sludge on Land
in the Cambridge
University (UK) in cooperation with CIWEM (Chartered Institution of
Water and Environmental Management) and the SORP (Sustainable Organic
Resources Partnership).
You are cordially invited to register.
The current EU Directive on the use of sewage sludge in agriculture
was agreed in 1986 but this was based on the knowledge of the evaluation
of the risks of such practices provided by the COST 68 programme during
the early 1980s. So the baseline is now about 25 years old! There
is a current wave of interest in re- evaluating risks using modern techniques
and with the benefit of some 25 years experience in using the Directive.
The EWA has decided to organise one of its reknown high focus workshops
to address this issue with the support of CIWEM and SORP in the UK.
Experts from all over the European Union and other European countries
are invited to attend the workshop!
OBJECTIVE: Review the current state of understanding of risks of using
sewage sludge (biosolids) on land and determine needs, if any, for change
to European Directives.
