In 2000, the European
Parliament has adopted a text that put in place a coherent framework
for protecting and improving water quality and resources across the
EU. It fixes compulsory rules for member states.
The WFD requires ambitious improvements in water quality and introduces
new powers to control emissions of dangerous substances to water.
